Top three tips for capturing those raw and real moments in your photography.
#1. Use posing to lead into movement.
Pose with intention, giving them the opportunity to use that pose to lead into some type of movement that feels and looks natural. Sometimes to bring this about, I will throw out a prompt that might feel a little awkward, but that’s usually where the magic happens. Don’t capture the awkward bit, capture the moments that follow.

#2. Don’t be afraid to be labeled “click happy”
Quick click click click click, that is how you capture those real in between moments. The quick glances at their loved ones, the smile that says it all, the genuine emotion. Those are the shots that say 1000 words.

#3 Have a cinematic mind set
The easiest way to bring shots to the forefront of your mind with the intent to capture images that MOVE you is to think to yourself “ how would I see this differently if I were shooting video? What would I want them to be doing?” This will create movement in your images, ultimately giving you the shots that make you feel something.

Imagine believing you're walking into just another engagement shoot, only to be completely speechless when you drive up to not one, but two saddled horses, a family of cowboys, their beautiful mother/fiance, and views that completely take your breath away. I was not emotionally prepared. and am still wrapping my brain around what an incredible experience this was to document. I just love this job and the people I get to meet. Literally CANNOT wait to shoot this couple's wedding at this same location in a few months!

Photographers…. You know what I’m talking about

But jokes aside, one of the best and easiest strategies for when you’re in an editing rut is to just simply step away from the computer and revisit the session again later with fresh eyes. Our eyes really do play tricks on us after hours of editing. Colors seem to blend together, temps can get more saturated, exposure might start getting too dark/light without us even really noticing.

For this reason alone I never ever deliver a gallery the day I complete the edit. I ALWAYS revisit it the next day with fresh eyes, make a few more adjustments, then send it off on its merry way.

Pro tip, surround yourself with your besties on your big day to help with those pre-wedding jitters ✨ oh and one more thing, play MUSIC while getting ready! I personally bring my Bluetooth speaker just incase getting ready needs a little extra to lighten the room. . Besties, music, a good charcuterie *wink, and you’re set.

After shooting with the 24-70 for years I thought yeah, let’s upgrade and see what it’s all about. And honestly the 28-70 2.0 has been a great lens. But if I’m being totally completely honest, I really miss my 24-70 and here are the three reasons why…

#1 size.
The 28-70 is massive, as in
👏🏼literally👏🏼weighs 👏🏼more
than my 70-200. The 24-70 was honestly the perfect size, weight, feel for long shoot days.

#2 cost
The investment / cost difference just isn’t worth the extra aperture space IMO

#3 sharpness / clarity
So many raved about the laser sharpness of the 28-70 claiming it shoots like a prime. While yes, it does take great images, I just don’t see much of a difference between it and the 24-70

So moral of the story is this. Yes it’s a great lens. Is it worth the investment? No… stick with the MUCH lighter, cheaper 24-70. Promise you won’t compromise image quality but you’ll save a pretty penny. Plus your arms and wrists will thank you after 8-10 hours of shooting 😘

Last post of this sweet couple before I move onto the next. Wedding season is coming quickly and I just can’t wait for it to begin! My love for wedding photography has actually been quite the surprise. I cant tell you the amount of times I have told friends, family, past clients that weddings just weren’t for me. I loved commercial photography; getting to work with people and amazing brands filled my bucket. But the past few years have brought shifts and change to my career and along with it I have fallen so in love with documenting your love stories. There is just something about witnessing and capturing a wedding day that sparks so much joy and is an honor I will never take for granted. If you were following my stories a few weeks ago, you saw me post about a wedding ceremony I shot in a cute little chapel in the heart of McCall Idaho. The chapel, while beautiful, was very dimly lit with very warm, artificial lighting. I went back-and-forth as to whether or not I should use my flash set up, as I prefer not to use it during ceremonies because it can be distracting. I ultimately decided not to use it, bumped up my ISO, with the plan to fix any grain and harsh lighting in post. I’m honestly always so blown away at what technology can do! Taking this photo from dark and extremely warm to the beautiful light and creamy photos you are used to seeing on my page ✨

Cheers to 26 years for this amazing couple who decided to commemorate their love lakeside and western themed at the amazing @glasshousemccall . They asked me to simply capture as many candid moments of their friends and family as I could. The energy, the vibe, the laughs, and the good time made for such a fun event to document !

I photographed this couple’s engagement session, their wedding, and now their newborn (cue tears). It was such a full circle moment documenting them love on their sweet new baby girl at the very same venue where they had their wedding a year ago! @scandiahotels

MEDIA MONDAY
Going forward I’m implementing media Monday, a day I’m setting aside for social media, posting, etc. The rest of the week stays MEDIA FREE with the goal to be more present, less distracted, and free from aimlessly scrolling.

Monday night before bed I’ll delete social media off my phone and stay off until the next Monday! And yes I’m posting this on here to keep me accountable for… a month, two? A year? Who knows! Just going to feel it out and see how it goes with no expectations.
